A Chihuly Tribute to Our Environment
On the Comer Education Campus, art is more than just a creative outlet. Art is a tool for youth to become civically engaged. This fall, art teacher Daria Amerik and her students created a 6-foot sculpture out of plastic water bottles that encourages us to think more critically about environmental stewardship. Their installation pays tribute to artist Dale Chihuly and explains how plastic materials are one of the leading causes of death for marine life and contribute to human health issues. Youth researched and incorporated information about plastic's damaging effect on the global environment and created signs to complete their public awareness campaign.
