Upcoming Opportunities & Application Instructions

Read the following instructions THOROUGHLY to learn how to apply to this summer’s 2020 youth employment opportunities at the Gary Comer Youth Center. There are multiple steps for each age group and opportunity, please read everything carefully. Step 1 applies to all ages. All youth must complete step 1.

STEP 1: Youth Employment Profile (For All Ages)

All youth from the ages 14 to 24 interested in GCYC Summer 2020 employment opportunities, must first complete a Youth Employment Profile.


STEP 2: FOR AGES 14-15

After School Matters

For youth aged 14-15, going in to 9th grade, who are ONLY interested in After School Matters (ASM) Leaps & Bounds – High School Transition and Readiness:

  1. Submit application here.
  2. Start a new or edit an existing SUMMER application.
  3. While completing the application, please make sure to do the following: on page 2, ‘Choose A Program’, scroll down to choose: Leaps and Bounds.

Youth Age 15, interested in:

  • SYGS: Youth Development, Program Assistance & Community Work
  • Art: Visual Arts 
  • Peacemakers: Community Engagement, Non-Violence, Peace Circles & Projects
  • Free Spirit Media: Journalism & Videography
  • Dance: Dance & Performing Arts
  1. Submit application here.
  2. Start a new or edit an existing SUMMER application.
  3. While completing the application, please make sure to do the following: on page 2, ‘Choose A Program’, scroll down to choose up to 3 of any of the following program(s) based on your interest:

For youth aged 14-15 who are interested in Civic Engagement, Green Careers, Sound Engineering, or Career/Entrepreneurship:

  2. Create or Login to account.
  3. While completing the application, please make sure to do the following on page 4:
  • Question: ‘Please select the organization(s) that you are interested in working with this summer.’ Choose ‘Chicago Dept of Family & Support Services’

  • Question: ‘Is there a particular agency you want to work with?’ Choose ‘Gary Comer Youth Center’

Green Teens

For youth age 15 who are also high school sophomores, juniors or seniors, and interested in urban agriculture and gardening:

For youth age 18 who are interested in becoming an assistant to an instructor for the After School Matters Peacemakers (Community Engagement, Non-Violence, Peace Circles & Projects) program:

  2. In body of the e-mail introduce yourself and include a paragraph about why you are interested in the position and your relevant experience.

Summer Academic Programs (Not Employment)

Upward Bound

Upward Bound is a College Preparation Program for rising sophomores through seniors. Participants will engage with English, Math, SAT Prep, STEM Exploration, College Counseling, and a weeklong college tour to Atlanta. Interested students will also be able to take a Dual Credit course with Kennedy King College.
